Preston Guild 2012
It is now less than two years to the start of the Guild Year. This to let you know what planning has already been done and some of the actions we now need to take urgently if our churches are to make the most of the Guild.
The story so far
There have been open consultation meetings among the Christian communities at which representatives of all Preston churches have been welcome. A small core group now meets regularly with the City Council to represent the views arising from the consultation meetings. The next consultation meeting is on xx
We have set out the following principles:
The Guild will celebrate both the unity of our city and the diversity within it. In respect of unity, the Council is likely to adopt the Churches’ suggestion of “Guild Values” such as Justice, Tolerance, Service etc with which all people of faith and others of goodwill can identify. In terms of diversity, different communities will wish to make their own contributions to the Guild. This will include a number of Ecumenical events arranged in association with the City Council, but this does not preclude individual groups organising complementary celebrations.
The Guild Year will probably run from January to December. Each month may focus on a different “Guild Value”. There will be events throughout the year, but the main celebrations, including the processions will be in the first week of September. There will be an Ecumenical Service on Sunday 2nd (to which the national church leaders are being invited) and an Ecumenical procession on Monday 3rd.
The Churches have agreed a theme of “The Living Christ” for their contribution to Guild. We are planning an all-day open-air performance of a play “The Life of Christ” in one of the parks.
What needs to happen now?
There is a huge amount to be done to make our part of the Guild a success and there is still much to be decided.
As in the previous Guild, decisions will be made by the all the churches rather than each church doing its own thing. For instance we would hope draw musicians from all the churches to form a Guild music group.
The individual churches in Fulwood and Broughton have been represented at the consultation meetings, but each now needs to set up a Guild Group, which we hope will involve younger people - the Guild provides a life experience.
Be inspired!
