History
The Parish of St Cuthbert was created in 1907 and originally met in a local school. After several years of planning, preparation and hard work, some £20,000 was raised and so construction began in February 1914 on a new church building on Lytham Road. Within a few months the “Great War” started and therefore the original plans were somewhat curtailed. However, to the credit of all those faithful people involved at the time, the building was completed despite the privations of war and consecrated on 25th July 1916
Since then St. Cuthbert's church has continued to be a faithful witness to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ - "The true light that gives light to all people..." (John's Gospel Chapter 1, verse 9). Through the regular Sunday services, the occasional offices (baptisms, weddings, and funerals) childrens work and a multitude of social and pastoral activities over more than a century, St.Cuthberts has been an important and integral part of the life of the local community.
Much of the history of the church is covered well in a booklet written by one of our Readers Mrs. Ruth Seed: “St.Cuthbert’s Church Fulwood 1907-2007” which is available via the church office. There is also an excellent full length display across several notice boards next to the office entrance which describes our journey as a worshipping church community and is a testimony to the faithfulness of previous generations (and always worth having a look as you might even recognise a few faces on the old photos!)
The New St.Cuthbert’s Church Centre
In 2004 after much prayer and seeking the Lord’s will, the old church building was demolished and a completely new building - “St Cuthbert’s Church Centre” - constructed on the existing footprint. The adjacent Douglas Hall building constructed in 1973 was retained. The New Church Centre cost just over £1 million and this was raised with roughly 1/3rd from the sale of church land, 1/3rd from the generosity of the congregation, and the other 1/3rd from grants (half of this from the Diocese). No funding was sought from the National Lottery or similar source
We still thank the Lord that progress was such that the building was completed in time to be officially opened by the Bishop of Blackburn, Nicholas Reade, on the 3rd March 2005. And moreover the final repayment of the loan was made as scheduled in June 2008 so that the church centre was completely paid for
We now therefore have a modern purpose built main church building with a worship area that can seat 200 people (or more if one allows for overflow into the adjoining hall) and is comfortable, relatively low maintenance, economical to run, with rooms for smaller meetings, and is used by many outside groups and church groups during the weekday days and evenings, occasional Saturdays, as well as on Sundays too. But don't take my word for it! Please come and have a look yourself, you would always be very welcome (there are two services on Sundays - the first at 9.30am: Family worship (sometimes with communion too) and the second at 11am: Morning Prayer or Holy Communion (click on the "Connecting" tab and look under "services")
